What was the goal?

With a chosen group of people, we were tasked with designing a card game! This was a school project, with the focus of the class being to use Microsoft Excel to our advantage when conceptualizing and designing the game.

What was the output?

As a group, we came up with the idea of a 3-5 player game where the players were all thieves who have to divide up stolen treasure, represented with cards, with the catch being that players could steal cards from the centre pile or each other at any point. While I liked this idea, I had the thought that we could change the theming to be about kids dividing up halloween candy instead! I thought it was a much cuter aesthetic, and would let us get much more creative with the cards, as well as adding some mischievous humour to the idea of kids stealing candy from each other.

We were also able to get more creative with action cards, like cards that said that your candy was expired or that your mom told you to share, and candy combinations offering more points, like getting Apples and Caramels for a Caramel Apple bonus. As a group, we all worked on an Excel sheet to plan out and design the cards we would need, as well as action cards and any interesting combos. After some playtesting with quickly sketched prototype cards, I later was tasked with conceptualizing and designing the final cards.

Takeaways

This is the second card game I’ve worked on, and I think I had even more fun than the last! I’m really proud of my contribution to overhauling the theming and the concepts I created for the cards. Our game was one of the most enjoyed by the class, due to the nature of a game where cheating was encouraged causing a lot of chaos during play sessions!
