What was the goal?
As part of a Level Design class, we were given a random building and settings, and were tasked to design a level based on it. I ended up getting a prayer room in a mountain.
What was the output?
I decided to lean heavily into the religious aspect of a prayer room, designing a narrative of a false god named Kall. The player is a part of a cult that worships him, and is tasked with making a pilgrimage up a snowy mountain to reach his shrine. Along the way, the player would meet non-cultists on the mountain, who provide them with warmth and food.
It is up to the player to decide whether they shall eat the food or offer it as sacrifices to Kall, or whether they will accept the warmth of these non-believers at all. The main theme of the story is whether the path to salvation and religious acceptance should be paved with suffering and death, and whether devotion should be given to a being that is so cold and unforgiving.
I designed a single level that would take place in this game, where the player would start at a lodge and make their way up higher in altitude, defeating monsters and collecting items along the way, and having to choose between different paths, all eventually leading to a prayer room with a mini-boss. These bosses were designed to be the higher-ups of the cult, defeating them being a part of the pilgrimage. After their defeat, the player is able to head to the next lodge and continue their journey.
Takeaways
This was a great exercise in level design before doing any sort of work in an engine. It allowed me to create a vertical slice for what a hypothetical game would be, and got me really excited about the concept! I greatly enjoyed mapping out the level and all the concept art I had to create. I’m hoping that one day I’ll be able to utilize this documentation to create an actual game!
