What was the goal?

As part of a game design class, we were tasked with creating a narrative game using Inky where the player had to manage different variables, creating some kind of transformation based on one of the United Nation’s sustainable development goals.

What was the output?

I decided to base my game off of SDG 11, to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. To do this, I designed an Ink game where the player is the mayor of a city called Renewaton. The city is currently not very sustainable, and the player decides to use their funding to create environmentally impactful projects, like green roofs, sustainable energy sources, and vertical farming.

However, these projects cost quite a bit of money, meaning the player has to hold conferences in order to gain funding, provided their public opinion is high enough and they say the right things. By the end of the game, the player will have fully transformed their city in numerous ways to be more environmentally friendly.

I wanted the player to go through all the different projects the mayor takes on, in order for them to be truly transformed and educated on the different ways cities can become more sustainable. I also wanted them to understand how costly certain projects can be, and the reasons why we may not see many of what happens in the game in the real world.

Takeaways

This was one of my first times using Inky, and I found it rather simple but powerful! It allowed me to really focus on the narrative of the game and the transformations I wanted to achieve. I think the final product really sells this transformation, as it has the player manage their public opinion and money while trying to create the sustainable city they desire. I think this game fits what I wanted it to be; a cute little short story with an environmental message!
