What was the goal?
As part of the Game Design course, one of my classes was an advanced Level Design class. For this class, our project was to choose a game to design and create a level for, ideally being around 10 minutes of a complete round of play. When I heard the assignment, I was instantly drawn to the idea of making a SUPERHOT level.
What was the output?
The level I ended up creating is called 31WAREHS, intended to be in around the middle portion of the game, requiring some skill from players while not being too difficult. I ended up recreating all the mechanics from SUPERHOT, including enemy AI, the time dilation effects, and the different weapons. After creating a playground for all these mechanics, I designed a level based around a warehouse that the player can explore and fight their way through.
I also created a fully fleshed out Level Design document to help my design, including all the design decisions I made along the way as well as maps, metrics, and other important design details. I conducted many playtests along the way and took the feedback into consideration, resulting in a final level I was happy with after multiple iterations.
Takeaways
Designing and creating this level taught me a lot about level design in general, especially since it was a 3D shooter. I had to take the player's ability to defend and cover themselves into consideration. I also feel like I learned a lot about iterating on designs through playtest feedback.
