What was the goal?

This game was created for the Sheridan Winter 2024 Design Week! I was placed in a random group of 6 people, and we were tasked with creating a microgame, lasting around 30 seconds, that would be showcased on arcade cabinets!

What was the output?

As a team, we conceptualized a lot of different ideas, but eventually landed on a game where the player was tasked with clearing all the ads on a movie pirating website in the 30 second time frame. I mainly worked on conceptualizing the UI; at first, I had designed it to be a site where the player was trying to buy a product, but that came off too much like another ad, so we quickly changed it to a movie site, as this was also much more relatable and comedic.

Aside from the UI and background art, I also created a lot of the pop-up ads. We all based them on ads we had seen online before, so many players found it extremely humorous. We had to make sure our assets were imported in ways that would allow the programmers to turn them into interactable ads, but by the end of the week, we had created a rather charming microgame that fully worked on the arcade cabinet!

Takeaways

This was a very fun project to work on. Since the length of the game had to be so short, it really allowed us to get more creative with the finer details, especially all the ads we created. Our game really sold the experience of struggling with persistent ads and pop-ups, which led to it being one of the most popular games at the showcase! Many players found it hilarious and also quite challenging to beat!
