What was the goal?
This game was created for the Sheridan Fall 2025 Design Week! I was placed in a random group of 6 people, and we were tasked to create an alternate controller game.
What was the output?
My team and I came together and conceptualized a game where the main controller was a tape measure. We thought the tactility of the tape snapping back into the casing was very similar to a frog's tongue, and hence the idea was conceptualized. We used Arduino and a Nintendo Switch Joycon to create a working controller that we hooked up to our Unity game.
I mainly worked with the programming of the Arduino and Joycon, and I created concept sketches that led to us creating a fully working physical controller out of wood that we could place our Joycon and Arduino into. I was also the project manager, and often made the final decisions and led my team through development. The final game worked perfectly and was one of the most popular at the showcase!
Takeaways
This was my introduction into programming with Arduino and Joycons, and I learned so much about creating alternate controller games! I was super proud of our final game, as the tactility of the controller felt extremely satisfying along with the gameplay. Design Week projects also always teach me a lot about team dynamics and continuing to enhance my soft skills when working in groups. I also went into this Design Week as a third year, meaning it was up to me to step up as a project manager for the second and first years, which taught me a lot about leading a team!
